Shirley A. Cervantes, 79, Avid Fan of the Cleveland Guardians

Born in Loran on June 6, 1945, Shirley was a 1963 graduate of Clearview High School and a former parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township.

For more than three decades she had been employed as a sales associate in the men’s department at the Sears & Roebuck store located in Midway Mall. During that time, she cultivated numerous friendships that continued right up until the time of her passing.

Shirley was an avid fan of the Cleveland Guardians (Indians); in her free time she found relaxation in the form of league bowling with her late husband as well as meeting the challenges posed by word find and word search puzzle books. She also displayed a love for her four pet cats and was known for her willingness to always meet the need of any stray feline that would happen to visit her property. Undeniably, the most important element of her life was her family.

She is survived by daughters Melissa M. Hernandez and Tina Cervantes-Fragapane both of Elyria Township. Additional survivors include granddaughters Mariah Hernandez and Katerina Jakubisin (Dan), along with her brother Howard N. Wieland Jr. (Lillian) residing in Holliston, Massachusetts.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Manuel “Manny” Cervantes in 2007, father Howard N. Wieland, Sr. in 2003, mother Jennie Wieland (nee Lunn) in 1990, and sister Marcella Bedo in 2016.

Private family visitation will take place under the direction of the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Graveside services will be conducted in Calvary Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday June 6th.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley’s memory are encouraged to her daughters in care of the funeral chapel.
