Dave Kosco, 80, U.S. Army Veteran
Dale A. Kosco, age 80, of Lorain, passed away peacefully at his residence on the morning of Saturday August 24, 2024 following an extended illness.He was born in Lorain on September 7, 1943 and remained a life-long resident of the city. Dale attended Holy Trinity Parish School and went on to become a member of the first graduating class of Admiral King High School in 1962. During his days in high school, he was a standout guard and multiple varsity letterman on the basketball team.
Following graduation, he worked for Fruehauf Trailer Corporation; in 1965 Dale was drafted into the United States Army. Following basic training he was dispatched to Southeast Asia and fulfilled duty assignments as a Specialist 4 attached to the 411th OSRET at Tan Sun Nhut Air Base in Vietnam. He held a Sharpshooter Badge for the M-14 rifle and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. Dale was a long-time member of Amvets Post # 47 in Lorain and had served as the canteen manager there for over ten years.
Upon return from military service he worked for Dorsey Plumbing; he later joined the outside sales division of the Rex Pipe and Supply Company and embarked on a career that spanned more than three decades with the company.
As a youth, he played baseball for Nickoloff Builders and Kucirek’s in the Lorain Youth League. He later transitioned to adult softball where he played for the Villa Capri Lounge.
A parishioner of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain, he was a longtime member of the Lorain Slovenian Home where he served as the canteen manager there for twenty years. He was also a member of the American Slovak Club, The American-Croatian Club, and the Knights of Columbus.
Dale was passionate about the game of golf and had been recognized for a hole-in-one which he recorded on the 7th hole of the south course at Thunderbird Hills in Huron. In addition, he was an avid fan of all three Cleveland professional sports franchises as well as the Ohio State Buckeyes. He enjoyed league bowling in his free time as well as playing cards and watching classic television shows including a special interest in episodes of Colombo and the Andy Griffith Show.
Survivors include daughters Beth Ann Heider (Bradley - deceased), Becky E. Petrisko (Scott), and Andrea L. Koury (Bryan ) all of Lorain, son Dale D. Kosco, of Lorain grandchildren Thomas Matthew, Andrew, Alexis, Adrian, and Jordan and great grandchildren Kylie and Andrew. Additional survivors include brothers Robert and Timothy (Vickie) both of Lorain, and sisters Mary Ellen Kovacs (Andrew deceased) of Lorain, and Chris Kosco (Mary Keith) of Vermilion. Dale was preceded in death by his wife Mary Sue Kosco (nee Smith) in 2016, parents Andrew Cuppy and Helen E. (nee Brezina) Kosco, brothers Jerome and James Cuppy Kosco, son-in-law Bradley Heider, and brother-in-law Andrew Kovacs.
Visitation will be Friday August 30th from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will take place in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery (555 North Ridge Road, Lorain) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday August 31st. Those attending are requested to assemble along the main drive of the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. The Very Reverend Andrew Nagrant, pastor of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria.
