George S. Fundak, 95, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of George S. Fundak George S. Fundak, age 95, of Elyria Township, passed away at Mercy Health Lorain Hospital on the afternoon of Monday April 3, 2023 following a brief illness.

He was born in Lorain on April 20, 1927 and had been a life-long resident of Lorain County and a resident of Elyria Township since 1950. George was a graduate of Lorain High School.

He served in the U.S. Maritime Service from 1943-1944 and then fulfilled duty assignments as a Seaman First Class with the United States Navy from 1945-1946 He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Ribbon as was a member of American Legion Post # 12 in Elyria.

George had been employed for more than three decades as an employee, manager, and Vice President of Elyria Savings and Trust National Bank which served residents of Elyria, Avon Lake, North Ridgeville, and Lagrange. He was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking and also attended a host of other banking schools during his career with EST. He retired in 1988.

George was a High Mason and was also active with the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a long-time member and former President of both the Lagrange Lions Club and North Ridgeville Kiwanis. In his free time, he enjoyed the challenges of golf.

He is survived by his son Mark Fundak of Elyria and daughter Marsha Fundak residing in Amherst. He also leaves grandchildren Patrick Smith (Heidi), Wendi Black, Brandt Fundak (Candy), Jeffrey Black (Kelly), Matthew Fundak, and Steven McCroskey, Jr. along with great grandchildren Cassidi Skipper (Austin), Garrett Watson, Noah Fundak, Aidan Black, Tyler Black, Henry Fundak, and Gavin Smith. George was also the proud great great grandfather of Levi Skipper. In addition, he leaves a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-two years Martha “Marty” (nee Breznenik) in 2010, parents Rock and Anastasia (nee Evanus) Fundak, great grandson Ernest Ross Watson, IV, brothers Paul Sifter, John, Joseph and Frank Fundak, and sisters Mary Matos, Rose Tomsco, Margaret Versace, and Anna Gidycz.

Visitation will be Monday April 10th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday April 11th from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Mr. Jeffrey Black will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
