John Sopko, 93, Enjoyed Bowling & Gardening

He was born in Slovakia on June 29, 1923 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1938.
Mr. Sopko was employed in the electrical maintenance department of U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works for forty years; a member of United Steelworkers Local # 1104, he retired in 1982.
Red was a parishioner of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain and was also a member of the Greek Catholic Union Lodge # 77. In addition, he was a member of the Russo-Slav Club, the American Slovak Club, and Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 all of Lorain.
In his free time he enjoyed bowling and gardening. In addition, he liked playing in 66 tournaments at the American Slovak Club.
Survivors include his daughters Rosanne Reardon and Kathleen Varuolo, son Edward, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Priscilla (nee Abahazi) in 2011, by his parents Stephen and Zuzana (nee Gojdic) Sopko, and by sisters Mary, Anna Mosko, and Rosemary Johnson.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Panachida services will be Monday at 11:30 in the funeral chapel. The Very Reverend Nicholas R.A. Rachford, J.C.L. pastor of the parish will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
