Florence K. Cooke, 88, Enjoyed Travel and Trips to Las Vegas
Florence K. Cooke (nee Nowicki), age 88, passed away at Amherst Manor Nursing Home in the early morning hours of Wednesday July 27th, 2016.
She was born in Lorain on September 28, 1927 and was a 1945-A graduate of Lorain High School.
Florence had been employed as a sales associate for the J.C. Penney Company store at Midway Mall in Elyria for a number of years.
A parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Sheffield Lake and a member of the Socialites Club of Elyria, she was formerly active with the PTA at Homewood Elementary School and had also served as Den Mother of Cub Scout Pack 350.
She was an avid reader who enjoyed travel and trips to Las Vegas. In addition, she liked playing bingo and was a familiar face at many of the local games throughout greater Lorain.
Survivors include her sons Allan (Theresa) Cooke of Waldorf, Maryland, and Arthur (Bonnie) Cooke of Sheffield Village, and daughters Anne (Fred) Schindler of Kettering, Ohio and Carol (Curtis) Szucs of Amherst. She also leaves grandchildren Amanda Cooke-Szczepanski, Kyle Cooke, Rachel Szucs, Macy Szucs, Fred Schindler, II, Cynthia Schindler, Edward Schindler, Christopher Cooke, Jennifer Young, Megan Cooke, and Matthew Cooke, great grandchildren Grant, Grace, Kendall, Camille, Derek, Ryann, Hunter, and Mya, along with her sister Elaine (Steven) Luca of Lorain.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband Albert E. Cooke in 1981, by her parents Leo and Anna (nee Wiatroski) Nowicki, and by her sister Dorothy Rich.
The Cooke Family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers on the third floor of Amherst Manor for their care and compassion during Florence’s residency there.
Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church – 512 Harris Road, Sheffield Lake. Reverend Stephen Shields will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park.
