Virginia M. Tomko, 84, Had a Passion for Home Decorating

Photo of Virginia M. Tomko Virginia M. Tomko, (nee Mailowski), age 84, of Lorain, passed away peacefully on the evening of Wednesday May 11th while under the care of Mercy New Life Hospice.

Born in Lorain on March 28, 1932, Virginia was a graduate of Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1950-B

She was most recently employed as an assembler for York International in Elyria; she retired in 1994 following a career that spanned seventeen years with the manufacturer. She had previously worked in the cafeteria at Lorain Catholic High School.

Virginia was a long-time parishioner of Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church in Lorain where she was also a member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She was extremely proud of her Polish heritage and was a member of the United Polish Club of Elyria as well as of the former United Polish Club of Lorain.

Virginia displayed a passion for home decorating and enjoyed transforming every room of her home to coincide with appropriate decor for every holiday. In addition, she enjoyed listening and dancing to polka music as well as befriending animals. Her favorite activity was spending time with her family.

She leaves sons Bob (Denise) of Upland, California, Jeff (Laura) of Hoover, Alabama, and Jim (Debbie) of Solon, daughter Kathy (Keith) Furnas of Avon, and grandchildren Robbie, Ryan, D.J., Andrew, Austin, Carly, Kaitlyn, and Alexis Tomko, along with Logan, Nathan, and Dana Furnas.

Virginia was preceded in death by her first husband Robert F. Tomko in 1994, by her second husband Richard Zawada in 2005, and by her parents Myron and Anne (nee Tesarek) Mailowski.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. The Nativity BVM Altar & Rosary Society will recite the rosary there at 2:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday beginning with closing prayers offered in the funeral chapel at 9:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Avenue. Reverend Robert Glepko, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
