Clarence L. Geisel, 89, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Clarence L. Geisel Clarence L. Geisel, 89, of Lorain, died Sunday January 31, 2016 at Main Street Care Center in Avon Lake.

He was born December 15, 1926 in Nemacolin, Pennsylvania and had moved to Lorain in 1947.

Clarence served with the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater as part of Navy Amphibious Forces. He was stationed aboard the US LST 1096, US LST 731 and US LCT 1063 serving as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class. He was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon with One Star, WWII Victory Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

Clarence worked at US Steel in Lorain in the seamless mills in electrical maintenance for 24 years and in the Coke plant as maintenance foreman for 6 years retiring in 1976.

He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 in Lorain where he served on the DAV Honor Guard and as chaplain during military funeral services. He was also a life member of VFW Post #451 in Lorain and a member and past vice president of the Lorain Veterans Council. In 2008, Clarence was honored to be chosen as Veteran-of-the-Year.

Clarence was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Lorain, the US LST Association, the US Steel Management Club and Lorain Senior Fellowship. He was a former member of the Black River Township Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Black River Township Zoning Board of Appeals. He was also a former member of the Lorain Emergency Police and Lorain Auxiliary Police. He enjoyed traveling and woodworking.

Clarence was honored to be presented with an Honorary High School Diploma at Admiral King High School in Lorain for veterans who left school early to serve in the military during World War II.

He is survived by his daughters Susan Majcher (Ken) of Lorain and Judy Yockey (Carl) of Frisco, Texas, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and brother Charles Geisel of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Betty J. Geisel (nee Glover) in 2012, son Gary Geisel in 2013, parents Joseph and Martha Geisel (nee Seva) and two brothers and one sister.

The family will receive friends Wednesday February 3rd from 3:00 – 7:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Additional viewing time will be on Thursday February 4th from 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at Faith United Methodist Church, 2201 Reid Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Karen Hollingsworth, pastor, will officiate. Cremation will follow. The ashes will be interred on Friday at 2:00 pm at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, 44805 N Ridge Rd, Amherst Township where the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
