Rocco D. Luvera, 93, Decorated Army Veteran

Photo of Rocco D. Luvera Rocco D. Luvera, 93, of Lorain passed away on Friday evening, January 8, 2016 at the Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.

Mr. Luvera was born in Cincinnati on Dec 3, 1922 to the late Frank Luvera and Lucy (nee Coco) Luvera Scalizitti.

He was a decorated Army Veteran of W.W.II. He was a member of the 94th Signal Battalion and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge: remembered by his comrades as a hero. Fellow soldier Ray Kitts recalls Mr. Luvera's heroic actions at the Remagen Bridge Battle. " Rocky Luvera disappeared into the fog heading to the East side of the Ramagen Bridge to access damage and position of the enemy, while communication lines were being established. Moments later heavy machine gun fire was heard by the men of the 94th stationed on the West part of the bridge. Myself and a couple of buddies raced across the bridge and through fog to give Rocky and his men back up. When we reached the other side, we observed Rocky with a smoking machine guns having cleared the bridge of enemy with the assistance of his comrades. " Mr. Luvera received the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three stars.

Mr. Luvera was a retiree from the Ohio Edison Company with more than 34 years of faithful service.

He was a member of the Italian American Veterans Post 1, VFW POST 451, American Legion Post 30, the 94th Signal Battalion Reunion Committee.

He was an avid golfer, enjoyed jig saw puzzles and word puzzles.

Mr. Luvera is survived by his son David (Debra) Luvera of New Port Richey, FL and a sister Mary Castro of Buckhead, GA, several nieces and nephews and many good friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son James Luvera in 2014 and sisters JoAnn and Angie.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016 from 10 am until services at 11:00 in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street. Lorain, Ohio.

Burial with full military honors provided by the Lorain Honor Guard will be in the Calvary Cemetery.
