Michael A. Gordon, 69, U.S. Army Veteran
Michael A. Iron Mike Gordon, age 69, of Amherst, passed away on Monday November 2, 2015 at Mercy New Life Hospice of St. Joseph following an illness of five months.He was born in Lorain on February 23, 1946 and had been a resident of Lorain County for his entire life.
Mike was a veteran of the United States Army fulfilling duty assignments as a Private First Class attached to the 326th Engineer’s Batallion, 101st Airborne Division during the Viet Nam War. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Viet Nam Service Medal with one Campaign Star, and the Parachutist Badge; he also held an Expert Marksman's Badge for the M-14 rifle. He was a member of VFW Post # 1662 in Amherst.
Mr. Gordon was employed as an iron worker with Ironworker’s Local # 17 of Cleveland; his affiliation with the union found him working on a variety of projects throughout northern Ohio.
Mike was also a member of Amherst Eagles Aerie # 1442. Well known for his creative welding skills, he enjoyed fixing and repairing things in his free time.
Survivors include his sons Brandon Gordon (Sherrie Seitz) of Amherst and Christopher Gordon of central Ohio, grandchildren Memphis and Lillian, mother Helen Gordon (nee Freska) of Amherst, and sister Iva Rilling (Donald) of Lancaster, Kentucky.
Mike was preceded in death by his father Everett, and by brothers Edward Gordon and Peter Thomas.
Visitation will be held privately for the family in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive in Amherst, Ohio on Monday November 9th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place later in Calvary Cemetery.
