William James Sandor, 84, U.S. Air Force Veteran

He was born to the late Paul and Marie Sandor on June 6, 1931 in Lorain, Ohio. Bill was a 1949 graduate of Lorain High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic/electrician during the Korean War from 1949--‐1953, was stationed in South Dakota and earned ranking of Sergeant. He retired from U.S. Steel, Lorain in 1986 after 31 years of employment.
He married the love of his life, Geraldine on May 14, 1955. This year they celebrated their 60th anniversary.
Bill was an active member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church. He was a member of the St. Nicholas Holy Name Society and St. Nicholas softball, bowling and golf leagues. He also enjoyed his time volunteering in the parish kitchen making nut rolls and pirohi. He portrayed St. Nicholas for 16 years on St. Nicholas Day during the church’s annual celebration. He also drove the school bus and was a church usher. But his favorite hobby was taking care of his house, yard and garden with his wife. Bill had a positive outlook on life and his goal was to leave people smiling. He was quick witted to the end.
Bill is survived by his wife Geraldine Gerrie (née Buganski); his four children Christine (Robert) Katricak, Lorain; Barbara (Garry) Gibbs, Elyria; Paula Sandor, Lakewood; William (fiancé Cindy) Sandor, Akron. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: John (Erin), Becky and Bobby (Kristen) Katricak, Jenny (Joshua) Berner, Kevin and Kara Gibbs, Zak and Kaeley Sandor. He has four great grandchildren, Rose and Jacob Katricak, Gavin and Caleb Berner. He is also survived by his sisters Dorothy Bremer, Lorain, and Betty Lapos, Avon, and brother, Al Sandor, Alabama.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Marie (née Sandor) Sandor, step-mother Mary (née Milas) Sandor, and brother Edward Sandor.
The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna‐Shimo‐Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, Ohio 44055 where the Parastas Services will be held Friday at 4:00 pm. Panachida services will begin Saturday at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 am at St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 W. 40th St, Lorain. The Rev. Nicholas Rachford, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Disabled American Veterans Post #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
