John R. Fundak, 96, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of John R. Fundak John R. Fundak, 96, of Lorain, died Wednesday September 23, 2015 in the intensive care unit at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain after a short illness.

He was born November 6, 1918 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

John graduated from Lorain High School and then served with the US Navy in the Marshall Islands during World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal.

He was a member of St. Peter Parish in Lorain. He enjoyed golfing, dancing at the Aragon Ballroom in Lorain, casino bus trips, traveling and watching sports on television.

He is survived by his daughter Denise Fundak of Roselle, Illinois, sister Ann Gidycz of Columbus, brothers George Fundak of Elyria and Joseph Fundak of Chicago, Illinois and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years Marie R. Fundak (nee Spahia) in 2010, parents Rok and Anastasia Fundak (nee Ivanos), brothers Paul Sifter and Frank Fundak and sisters Mary Matos, Rose Tomsco and Margaret Versace.

The family will receive friends Sunday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at St. Peter Parish, 3655 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
