Matthew A. Yakovich, 94, World War II Veteran

He was born October 5, 1920 in Marianna, Pennsylvania and had resided in Sheffield Village most of his life.

Matthew served with the US Army during World War II in Europe, Germany and France.

He worked at US Steel in Lorain and Homenik Garage Door.

He was a member of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Sheffield Village. He enjoyed bowling, playing poker, listening to classical music and sketch art.

He is survived by his son James “Jay” of Lorain, daughter-in-law Debbie Yakovich (nee Golan), one granddaughter, great granddaughters and brother Joseph (Rosemary) Yakovich of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen M. Yakovich (nee Mraz) in 2000, infant son Michael Yakovich, parents Anthony and Mary Yakovich (nee Derezic), brother James “Jack” Yakovich and sisters Eleanor Waszily and Emily Ehrman. His son Mark Yakovich passed away June 24, 2015.

Prayers for Matthew will be said during the funeral mass for his son Mark on Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 1878 Abbe Rd, Sheffield Village. Matthew’s ashes will be buried along with his wife Helen’s ashes and their son Mark following Mark’s funeral mass in St. Teresa Cemetery. Military honors for Matt will be conducted by the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #20 of Lorain.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain.
