Benjamin P. Poplar, 87, Was a lifelong airplane enthusiast

Photo of Benjamin P. Poplar Benjamin P. Poplar, 87, of Lorain, departed this life Wednesday, March 25, 2015 in the intensive care unit at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain due to a sudden illness.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Jean (nee Nowakowski), two sons Benjamin and Mark, brothers Robert and Richard, sister Ann-Marie Lehman and granddaughters Melissa and Kimberly. He was preceded in death by parents Ben and Anna Poplar (nee Kurawski).
Ben was a lifelong resident of Lorain and served for a time in the Navy as a seaman gunner during WWII serving on the USS Kenneth Whiting.

He was active in the Black River quarter midget racing club, The Black River Trailblazers, an RV club and the LCCUG computer club. Formally a member of St. Stanislaus church, he served as a councilman and scoutmaster of Troop 323.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, tennis and was a lifelong airplane enthusiast. He and his wife traveled multiple times across the country in their RV.

He worked at the Fruehauf Trailer Co. For 23 years as a Yoder setup man and with Jig and Fixture until the company moved. He also worked in tool and die at Tappan, Stanadyne and Moen before retiring from Western Steel in Elyria.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 1, at 10:30am at the Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain where the mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday at 11:30am. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.

Arrangements are under the director of Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain.
