Samuel J. Shumyla, 97, Enjoyed league golf and bowling

Samuel J. Shumyla, age 97, of Lorain, passed away at his residence on Saturday March 21, 2015.

He was born in Buck Run, Pennsylvania on February 28, 1918 and had been a resident of Lorain since his childhood.

Sam was a graduate of Lorain High School. Well known for his work ethic, he began working for a local printing company immediately following his graduation from high school. He later worked for the American Shipbuilding Company, the Cadillac Tank Plant and also assisted his brother in the operation of his Sinclair gas station in south Lorain. Sam also worked as a part-time carpenter; his skill in the trade helped him build several homes, including his own.

The bulk of Mr. Shumyla’s career was spent in the steel industry. He served the U.S. Steel Corporation for forty three years working for two decades in the # 1 Machine Shop; he rounded out his career as a supervisor in Maintenance Order and Planning Services (MOPS). He was a member of United Steelworkers Local 1104.

He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Private attached to the 159th Quartermaster Platoon.

Sam was a parishioner of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church as well as a member of the Lorain Senior Fellowship.

In his free time he enjoyed league golf and bowling. His greatest love, however, was spending quality time with is family and friends.

Survivors include his sons Jerome S. (Jean) Shumyla, John M. Shumyla, and Tyrone J. Shumyla all of Amherst, along with grandchildren Christine (Nicholas) Quarando, Rachel (Michael) DeVienzio, and Nicholas Shumyla. Additional survivors include great grandchildren Ellie Quarando and Drew DeVienzio.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen (nee Susi) in 1998, by his grandson Michael, by his parents John and Anna (nee Kos) Shumyla, by his sister Helen Shumyla, and by his brother Andrew Shumyla.

A Parastas service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Visitation will continue in the funeral chapel following the service until 8:00 p.m. Panachida services will be observed Thursday beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. Funeral services in St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church (2711 West 40th St.) will follow at 11:00 a.m. with The Very Reverend Nicholas R.A. Rachford, J.C.L. pastor of the parish presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
