Raymond F. Stein, 88, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Raymond F. Stein Raymond F. Stein (Stejno), age 88, of Sheffield Lake, passed away on the evening of Friday March 20th, 2015 while a resident of Avon Place Care Center.

He was born in Lorain on August 30, 1926 and lived in the Lorain area until relocating to Sheffield Lake in 1964. Raymond attended both Nativity B.V.M. Parish School and Hawthorne School.

In 1944 he left high school to join the United States Navy during World War II. He served with the Sea Bees 146th Naval Construction Battalion as a Machinist’s Mate Third Class fulfilling duty assignments in Okinawa, Japan. He was the recipient of the American Campaign Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, the Occupation Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a past member of Pulaski Post # 38 of the Polish Legion of American Veterans.

Following his discharge, he completed his high school education and graduated from Lorain High as a member of the Class of 1947-A.

Mr. Stein was employed by the United States Steel Corporation for forty years. He began his career in the Locomotive Crane Service, moved on to the role of a time keeper, and subsequently completed his career in the Production Planning Department. He retired in 1987. He was a member Local 2354.

Raymond was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Sheffield Lake as well as a member of the United Polish Club. In his free time he enjoyed travel, visiting historical places, and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years Lucille (nee Ignath), his daughter Cheryl Stein (Robert Romes) of Avon Lake, and sons Dr. Kenneth Stein (Clara) of Stuttgart, Germany and Tom Stein (Cheryl Ann) of Avon. He also leaves granddaughters Anna Maria and Elizabeth.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna, by brothers Joe, Ted, and Don, and by his sister Emily Noster.

Visitation will be Thursday from 3 until 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will begin on Friday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 715 Harris Road Sheffield Lake. Reverend Stephen L. Shields, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post # 30 and VFW Post # 451 both of Lorain.
