Margarita Aponte, 86, Founding Member of Sacred Heart Chapel

Photo of Margarita Aponte Margarita Aponte (née Alvarado) 86, of Lorain, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.

She was born June 10, 1928 in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. She came to Lorain from Cayey, Puerto Rico in 1949. Margarita worked six years as a seamstress for Weitz Clothing Company, Lorain, and Joseph and Feiss in Cleveland.

Margarita was a founding member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, where she participated in the Cursillo Movement and the Altar and Rosary Society. She and her husband were involved in Sacred Heart’s first Financial Committee, which raised funds for the construction of the new chapel. Margarita was accomplished in fine needle stitchery. Her greatest pleasure in life came from providing for her family.

She will be deeply missed by her sons Alberto Aponte of Lorain and Harold Aponte of Clearwater, Florida; daughter Zulma (Edward) Shimkus of Long Valley, New Jersey; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and brothers Antonio Alvarado of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico and Angel Luis Alvarado of Lorain. Margarita was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Margarita was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Adalberto Aponte in 2012; her parents Bernardo and Evangelia (née Colon) Alvarado; brother Algio Alvarado and a sister Rosa Maria Alvarado.

Her family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 6 PM in Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, Ohio. Friends may also call from 8:30 until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at Sacred Heart Chapel, 3401 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. William A. Thaden will be the celebrant. The burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

Her family suggests memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Chapel Memorial Fund, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44055.
