Helen Piechowiak, 96, Weitz Clothing Seamstress

Helen Piechowiak, (nee Popa), age 96, of Lorain, died Thursday March 10, 2005 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following an illness of nine months.

Mrs. Piechowiak was born May 31, 1908 in Poland and had been a resident of the United States since 1949. She had been a resident of Amherst since 2001 moving from Lorain.

Mrs. Piechowiak was an accomplished seamstress who was employed by the Weitz Colthing Company for many years until the time of the entity’s relocation to Cleveland in 1957. A parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church of Lorain, she enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

Helen is survived by her daughters: Ursula Basinski of Lorain, Adele Govoni of Amherst Township, along with three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Wladyslaw Piechowiak in 1991, by a grandson: Chester Basinski in 1974, by her parents: John and Magdelena (nee Lakoma) Popa, by brothers: Martin, Joseph, Stanley, Frank, and Adam, and by sisters: Mary Plucinski, Anna Rajczak, and Pella Popa.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 13, 2005, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue – Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. in Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church – 1454 Lexington Avenue – Lorain. The Reverend Robert Glepko, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery – Lorain.
