John Ban, 83, Machinist

John Ban 83 of Lorain died Wednesday, March 9, 2005 in Avon Oaks Caring Community Avon following a lengthy illness.

He was born July 14, 1921 in Duquesne, Pennsylvania. He was a Lorain resident for 57 years coming here in 1948. He graduated from Duquesne High School and Pittsburg School of Aeronautics.

Mr. Ban retired from Lorain-Cuyahoga Works of U. S. Steel, Lorain as a machinist in 1983. He worked there for 38 years.

He served in the Army during World War II as a Sergeant with the 321 Depot Repair Squadron, participating in the battles of Central Pacific, Western Pacific, and Rvukyus. He earned the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Meritorious Unit Award, World War Victor Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and a Good Conduct Metal.

Mr. Ban was a member of Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ, Lorain, where he was a member of the Church Consistory and Brotherhood. He was also a member Hungarian Reformed Church Sick Benefit Society and it's Credit Union in Lorain. He enjoyed hiking and working at his church and walking his dog Smokey.

Among the survivors are his wife of 56 years Rose (nee Pollack) Ban, and many Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Alois and Sophie (nee Szabo); brother Charles Olah; sisters Dorothy Urban and Ethel Molnar.

Friends may call Saturday, March 12, 2005, at 12:00 PM until time of service at 1:00 AM at the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, Ohio. The Revrend Zoltan Kelemen, Pastor of West Side Hungarian Reformed Church, Cleveland will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, Ohio, where the Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy, Chapter 20, Lorain will conduct military honors.
