Helen Weaver, 88, Active with Erie Shores Girl Scout Council
Helen Weaver, (nee Vernel), age 88, of Elyria, died Monday, February 28, 2005 at EMH Regional Medical Center - Elyria following complications from surgery.Helen was born October 25, 1916 in Lorain and had been a resident of the Elyria United Methodist Village for the past five years coming from Amherst.
A 1935 graduate of Lorain High School, she was employed as a secretary and receptionist for a variety of doctors throughout the area including the late Dr. Robert Miller of Elyria. She later served in a similar capacity at Saint Mary Parish School. Active in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Mrs. Weaver was a former Girl Scout Leader affiliated with The Erie Shores Girl Scout Council and was instrumental in introducing the Girl Scout Movement to schools in northern Lorain County; she also was responsible for establishing the Marian Award for Catholic Girl Scouts within those same schools.
A parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter in Lorain, she was active with the Seniors Club of the parish as well as the Catholic Golden Agers of Lorain County. She was also a participant in the Senior Couples’ League at Rebman’s Recreation. For many years she served as a volunteer at the former Saint Joseph Hospital and Health Center in Lorain.
Helen is survived by a son: Kenneth A. Weaver of Lorain, daughters: Mrs. Ray (Kathleen) Steinmetz of Westfield Center, Ohio, Mrs. Richard (Donna) Comer of Avon, and Mrs. Dayne (Elaine) Thomas of Peyton, Colorado, along with sixteen grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband: Howard in 1991, by a granddaughter: Ann Thomas, by a great grandson: Brandon Comer, by her parents: John and Margaret (nee Lochter) Vernel, and a sister: Margaret Snodgrass.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 3, 2005, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Avenue Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter 3501 Oberlin Avenue Lorain. The Reverend Charles Henkle, O.F.M. Conv., associate pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Lorain.
