John M. Holland, 88, Raised Canaries & Test Grew Roses

John M. Holland, 88, of Lorain, died Wednesday February 23, 2005 at Oak Hills Nursing Center in Lorain.

He was born December 20, 1916 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

Mr. Holland worked as a tool & die maker at US Steel in Lorain retiring in 1978.

He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Lorain and the American Rose Society. Mr. Holland developed and raised roses, repaired watches and clocks and raised and sold canaries. He enjoyed football.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years Hazel R. Holland (nee Hambley), sons John E. Holland of Lorain, Michael T. Holland of Amherst, Russell P. Holland of Lorain and Richard J. Holland of Sweet Springs, Missouri, sister Louise Mihal of Amherst, 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Hazel R. Leonard, parents Edward M. and Marguerite (nee Trostle) Holland, sisters Kathryn Szombati, Margaret Swaney, Cecilia Smith, Helen Walsh, Mary Anastasia Holland and Leona Marcella Holland and brothers David Holland, Patrick Holland and Matthew Holland.

The family will receive friends Sunday, February 27, 2005, from 4-8 PM at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 AM followed by the mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM at St. John Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive in Lorain. The Rev. Thomas Smith, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
