Vergie Kathryn Nunn, 91, Expert Seamstress
Vergie Kathryn Nunn (nee Tolliver), 91 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, February 5, 2005 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home.She was born April 27, 1913 in Pineville, West Virginia where she was raised. She had made her home in South Amherst for over fifty years prior to moving to Amherst in 2001 to live with her daughter.
Vergie was a loving housewife and mother and a member of First United Methodist Church in South Amherst since 1974. In her younger years, she was involved with pre-school children in her church. She was an expert seamstress and loved to make quilts and afghans. She enjoyed gardening which included vegetables and beautiful flower gardens. She and her late husband enjoyed spending many winters in Florida and traveling to Paris and Germany.
Survivors include her sons Charles R. Nunn of Winter Park, Florida, Phillip W. Nunn of Wakeman; her daughters Betty A. Burgdorf of Amherst and Lois J. Russell of Lillian, Alabama; eighteen grandchildren; thirty grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, Charles M. Nunn on April 10, 2960; by her parents William Floyd and Martha Tolliver (nee: Phillips); three brothers; and six sisters.
Friends may call Thursday, February 10, 2005 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst where funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. The Rev. Gary Lunsford, pastor of First United Methodist Church in South Amherst, will officiate. Private family burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
