Edward A. Gressler, 88, Retired B.F. Goodrich Chemical Operator

Edward A. Gressler, age 88, of Lorain, died Saturday January 22, 2005 at the New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph following a brief illness.

Mr. Gressler was born July 25, 1918 in Piqua, Ohio and had been a resident of Lorain since childhood.

Mr. Gressler was a graduate of Lorain High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. He completed duty assignments as a Fireman First Class in the Pacific Theater and was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, and the American Area Medal.

He was employed as a chemical operator for the B.F. Goodrich Corporation of Avon Lake (predecessor to Poly One); he retired in 1981. He had previously been employed for more than twenty years as a route sales representative for the Trotta Creamery of Lorain.

Ed was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter whose hobbies included golf and league bowling.

Survivors include sons-in-law: Robert Hiser of Lorain and Daryl Shinsky of Berlin Heights, five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and a brother: Alex Gressler of Amherst. He was preceded in death by his wife: Marianne (nee Provenza) in 1996, by daughters: Karen Gressler in 1940, Beverly Hiser in 1985, and Carol Shinsky in 1993, by his parents: Alex and Helen (nee Shagie) Gressler, and by sisters: Pauline Szabo and Rosemary Glass.

Friends may call Friday, January 26, 2005, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10 a.m. in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, where full military honors will be conducted by officers and members of Louis Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
