Harriet Somers Smith, 90, Enjoyed Golf, Tennis and Bridge

Harriet Somers Smith, 90, of Vermilion, died Saturday, January 8, 2005 in Doctors Hospital, Columbus.

She was born December 15, 1914 in Elyria where she lived most of her life. She had lived in Vermilion the past 15 years, but had also lived in La Jolla, CA and Marco Island, FL.

She graduated from Elyria High School in 1934 and attended Ohio State University majoring in insurance. She worked for the Cleveland Insurance Board and Arthur R. Fisher, Inc. which later became Somers Insurance. She worked as a licensed insurance agent for Somers Agency, Elyria, for 25 years and had worked at Brandau Jewelers, Elyria, for 18 years. Harriet also worked at the Higbee Company, Midway Mall, as a shopper, and in the Crystal Room at Higbees for 10 years.

She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Elyria, and also a member of Mother Church in Boston, MA. She was one of the original members of the Elyria Junior Women’s Club. She was a member of the Social Progress Committee of the Elyria Women's Club and volunteered at the Elyria Crippled Children's Home. She was a member of the Eastern Stars, Elyria Chapter and one of the original starletts. She was a member of Elyria Country Club. She was one of the original members of LaCosta Country Club and LaCosta Women's Golf Association. She was president of the La Jolla Newcomer's Club and served as president of the Evans School Mother's Club. She was an officer of the Mother's Club of San Diego Military Academy and was a member of the Bonita Bay Country Club, FL.

She enjoyed golf, tennis and bridge.

Survivors include her daughter, Molly A Sommer of Vermilion; son, James H Smith, Cookeville,TN; 4 grandchildren, Joseph H. Smith, Rocky River, Christina Sommer, Tyler Sommer and Mindy Sommer, all of Vermilion; and a brother, Howard B. Somers of Naples, FL.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Joseph E. Smith, 1975 and her parents, Howard B. and Lulu (nee Hurst) Somers.

Friends may call Monday, January 10, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio.

Services will be held at the Riddle Funeral Home, Tuesday at 11 a.m. Ivamae S. Hawley, C.S. practitioner, will officiate.

Private interment will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
