Henry C. Marsico, M.D., 95, US Army Captain in WWII
Henry C. Marsico, M.D., age 95, of Lorain, died Friday November 19, 2004 at Avon Oaks Nursing Home in Avon following an extended illness.He was born March 24, 1909 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city.
As a youth, Dr. Marsico educated himself by working in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company's roundhouse.
He was a 1927 graduate of Lorain High School. He began his college education by enrolling at Oberlin College and moved on to attend The Ohio State University where he matriculated in the pre-med program there. He graduated from O.S.U. in 1932 with double degrees in chemistry and astronomy. He later enrolled in the Saint Louis University Medical School where he received his medical degree in 1936. His internship was fulfilled at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio.
Dr. Marsico served in the United States Army during World War II as a Captain assigned to the 48E Medical Battalion under General George S., Patton in the Second Armored Division. He fulfilled duty assignments in both the European and African Theaters.
Upon his return from the military, Henry embarked on a career as a general practitioner in greater Lorain where he made countless house calls and attended the births of scores of infants. He subsequently established two separate medical practices in Lorain. The first was a private practice in dermatology and the second in anesthesiology. He retired from active practice in 1974.
A parishioner of Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lorain, he was extremely active in civic affairs and served as past President of the Lorain Lions Club. He also served as Lorain City Health Commissioner from 1974 to 1983. He was a member of the American Medical Association and was the ringside physician for Lorain Golden Gloves competition. Re was a life member of Italian-American Veterans Post 4 tin Lorain, and a life member of Knights of Columbus Council # 637. He was also past president of the medical staff at the former Saint Joseph Hospital as well as a member of the Elyria Country Club.
In his free time, he enjoyed a passion for the game of golf.
Dr. Marsico is survived by his wife of fifty-three years: Victoria (nee Bogdan), daughters: Victoria Marie Thoma of Westlake and Jean Marie Tony of Elyria, sons: Leonard of Apple Valley, California, Henry of Elyria, Daniel of Downer's Grove, Illinois, eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife: Betty (nee Loveland), a grandson: Joseph Daniel Marsico, his parents: Leonard and Maria (nee Colovoja), sisters: Laura, and Angeline Amato, and by brothers: Anthony and Nicholas.
Friends may call Monday from 3 to 5 & 7 to 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway - Lorain where a memorial service will be conducted by Post # 1 of the Italian-American Veterans at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Church - 310 Eighth Street - Lorain. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park - Amherst Township where full military honors will be conducted by officers and members of Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 of Lorain.
