Carol E. Randall, 86, Vice President for Nursing Services
Carol E. Randall 86 of Elyria, formerly of Lakewood and Rocky River, passed away, suddenly, Sunday, October 24 at her home. Miss Randall was born, July 17, 1918 Lakewood and has lived in Elyria since 1998.Miss Randall was a graduate of Lakewood High School in 1936. She graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1944 and in 1954 she received her Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case-Western Reserve University.
She worked as a general staff nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital and Lakewood General Hospital from 1939-1942. From 1942 to 1944 she worked as the College Nurse at Baldwin-Wallace. She was the Science Instructor at Fairview Park Hospital, School of Nursing from 1944-47. She then became the Director of Education at Fairview Hospital from 1947 to 1952. In 1952 she became the Director of the Fairview School of Nursing. In 1953 she moved to Director of Nursing Services at Fairview Hospital and then in 1942 to until 1958 she was Director of Nursing. From 1958 to 1973 she served as the Director of Nursing at St. Luke’s Hospital and Associate Director of Nursing Services at St. Luke’s Hospital until 1982. She retired as Vice President for Nursing Services, St. Luke’s Hospital.
Miss Randall was a member of Cleveland General and St. Luke’s Nurses Alumni Association. She was a member of the local, state and national American Nurses Association, as well as the National League for Nursing.
Miss Randall served as President of the Cleveland General and St. Luke’s Nurses Association and the Cleveland League for Nursing Education. She was a member of the following boards: Greater Cleveland Nurses Association, Advisory Committee to Cuyahoga Community College Associate Degree Nurses Program; Kent State University School of Nursing and University of Akron, College of Nursing Liaison Committee for the Joint Master’s Program; Cleveland Committee on Community Resources for Nursing Education.
Miss Randall served as an Adjunct Professor at Kent State University and Clinical Instructor in Nursing, Case Western Reserve University. She was a member of the United Way Health Services Panel, a member of St. Luke’s Hospital Association and Baldwin-Wallace College Board of Trustees.
She served as the President of the Ohio League of Nursing; First Vice President, Ohio State Nurses Association (OSNA); Chairman OSNA Director of Nursing Assembly; Chairman OSNA Committee on Nursing Education. She was President of Ohio State Board of Nursing Education and Nurse Registration and a member of the Society for Hospital Nursing Service Administrators and the Ohio Hospital Association Service and Cost Committee.
Nationally she served the Department of Health, Education and Welfare as a member of the Panel for Nurse Training Act Project Grants; the National Advisory Council on Nurse Training and an Ad Hoc Committee on Vertical and Lateral Mobility in Nursing Education. For the National League of Nurses she served as the Vice Chairman of the NLN Council of Member Agencies of Diploma and Assoc. Degree Programs and the Board of review for Accreditation of Diploma Programs. For the American Nurses Association she was a member of the Nursing Service Administrators. She was a member of the National Nursing Council, Frontier Nursing Services.
Miss Randall was published in various publications.
She was honored by the Cleveland Council and League of Nursing for Contributions to the Field of Nursing. Member of Sigma Theta Tau (National Honor Society for Nusing). She received the Alumni Merit award, Baldwin-Wallace College and St. Luke’s Hospital Distinguished Alumna Award.
Miss Randall enjoyed travel and had visited many places around the world including many parts of the United States and Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Europe, Scandinavian countries, Greece, the Holy Land, Egypt, China, Australia and New Zealand.
She was an active member of Lakewood United Methodist Church and then the Avon United Methodist Church.
All service will be Wednesday, October 26 at 1:30pm at Avon United Methodist Church 37711 Detroit Rd. Avon. Rev. David Oliver of the Church will officiate. Interment will be private in Lakewood Park Cemetery. Memorials may be forwarded to Office of Development at Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, OH 44017.
