Gordon Charles Abel, 78, Machinist

Gordon Charles Abel, 78 years of age and a resident of Lorain, passed away Friday, October 22, 2004 at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky following a lengthy illness.

He was born July 16, 1926 in Hastings, Pennsylvania where he was raised. He moved to East Cleveland at the age of 16 and has been a resident of Lorain since 1988.

He served in the US navy during World War II aboard the USS Salt Lake City in the Pacific Theater where he received the Pacific Theater Medal with two bronze stars, the American Theater Medal, the Victory medal and the Philippine’s Liberation Medal.

Gordon was employed by Addressograph Multigraph Co. in Euclid, Ohio for twenty-three, taking medial retirement in 1980 as a machinist. He also served as manager for the Labaron Veteran’s Home, now the Rosella’s Group Home, in Lorain for thirteen years. He was a member of Midway Baptist church in Elyria. He was also a member of the Elyria V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Rosella J. Abel (nee: Collins); his daughter, Shirley Castro of Twinsburg, Ohio; his stepdaughter Rene Horecek of Wickcliff, Ohio; two grandchildren; his brother Robert Abel of Atlanta, Georgia; and his sisters Ruth Krause of East Cleveland, Regina Havas of Painesville, Ohio; and Sister Charlotte of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Abel in 1949 and Henrietta Abel (nee: Miller) in 1964; by his brothers Paul Abel, Oscar Abel, Russ Abel, and Ray Abel; and by his sister, Marge Coeing.

Friends may call Monday, October 25, 2004, from 5 – 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Midway Baptist Church, 41812 Griswold Road, Elyria. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the church. The Amherst Veteran’s Military Honor Guard will perform honors. The Rev. Charles Keesee, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Rosella’s Group Home, 3948 Reid Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44052.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst, Ohio 44001.
