Joe Russell Potter, 77, WWII U.S. Navy Veteran

Joe Russell Potter, 77 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away October 2, 2004 after a brief illness.

He was born February 28, 1927 in Scott Co., TN. where he was raised and lived until age 16 when he joined the service. He has been a resident of Lorain for the past thirty nine years.

Joe was a thirty five year member of the North Lake Missionary Baptist Church in South Amherst where he served for many years church greeter. He worked for the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant as an assembler retiring in 1981. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater and in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a gifted musician on the guitar and banjo and played for many years with the Basement Boy Band.

Survivors include his wife of fifty one years, Golda Potter (nee Todd); daughters, Angie York of Robbins, TN and Mrs. Dale (Pam) Cooper of Vermilion, OH; 2 grandsons Joey York and Curt Cooper and 3 great grandchildren Jessica York, Savannah York and David Cooper; sisters, Betty Chambers of Cincinnati, OH and Ann Hughes of Ft. Pierce, FL.

He was preceded in death by his son in law Larry York in 1979 and by his five brother and four sisters as well as his parents, Henry Clay Potter and Mini (nee Jeffers).

Friends may call Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the North Lake Missionary Baptist Church in South Amherst OH. The Rev. Carson Fraley, pastor, will officiate. Calling hours will continue on Wednesday at the Four Oaks Funeral Home 2889 Baker Hwy 63 Huntsville, TN 37756. Burial will be in Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery in Robins TN.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to North Lake Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Fund 323 North Lake Street South Amherst, OH 44001.
