Alfredo S. Orti Ortiz, 80, Enjoyed reading, gardening, and traveling

Photo of Alfredo S. Orti Ortiz Alfredo S. Ortiz, 80 of Lorain died Monday, July 5, 2004 in Avon Oaks Caring Community Nursing Home, Avon following a lengthy illness.

He was born July 14, 1923 in Lajas, Puerto Rico. He was a Lorain resident for 62 years moving from Caguas, Puerto Rico in 1942.

Mr. Ortiz retired in 1981 from Lorain-Cuyahoga Works of U. S. Steel, Lorain as a bricklayer. He worked there for 34 years.

During World War II, Mr. Ortiz served in the Army as a military policeman at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain He was also a member of He was also a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104 of Lorain. He enjoyed carpentry, reading, gardening, traveling, playing dominoes, bike riding, listening to music, and helping others.

Among the survivors is his son Alfred T. Ortiz of Lorain, five Grandchildren, a Great Granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Juanita "Guane" Ortiz (nee Torres) in 2001; parents Jose and Francisca Ortiz (nee Rodriguez); Brothers Jose Ortiz, Jr. Salvador, Juan, Broulio and Adolfo Ortiz; sisters Beatrice, Louisa, Isabel, Maria Terea and Catalina Ortiz.

Friends may call Wednesday 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, Ohio.

Funeral services will be Thursday with closing prayers at the funeral home at 8:45 AM followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 9:30 AM at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, South Lorain. Reverend, Father William A. Thaden, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, where the Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy, Chapter 20, Lorain will conduct military honors.
