Robert Smith Hamm, 74, Construction supervisor, avid Nascar Fan

Robert Smith Hamm, 74 years of age, and a resident of Elyria, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2004 at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria following a long illness.

He was born June 15, 1930 in Lansing, North Carolina. He has been a resident of Elyria for over 50 years.

Robert was a supervisor and part owner of the John R. Yates Construction Co. in Elyria, for 40 years. After the Construction Co. closed, he worked for the Great Lakes Construction Co. on the construction of road bridges. HE also worked four years for the Geupel DeMars Construction Co., retiring in 1991, working on the construction of several area prisons. He was a 50-year member of Carpenter Local #305 in Elyria. Robert was a member of East Broad Street Church of Christ in Elyria. He enjoyed traveling, wood working, gardening, lawn work, and was an avid NASCAR Race fan.

Survivors include his wife of forty-eight years Virginia Hamm (nee Rogers) his daughter Brenda Hamm of Lorain and Barbara Kidney of LaGrange, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Dossa Melissa Ham (nee Price); by his brothers Jones Hamm, Wiley Hamm, and Luther Hamm, and be his sister Belle Ham.

Friends may call Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. from the funeral home. Evangelist Robert Eddy, pastor of Toledo Road Church of Christ in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to East Broad Street Church of Christ, 1125 East Broad Street, Elyria, Ohio 44035 or the American Lung Association of Ohio’s South Shore, 226 State Route 61 East, Norwalk, 44857.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, Ohio 44001.
