Schaffer J. George, 87, WWII Vet, US Steel retiree, enjoyed bowling
Schaffer J. Schuffy George, age 87, of Lorain, died Saturday, May 1st, 2004 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following an extended illness.Mr. George was born June 14, 1916 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city.
Following his graduation from Lorain High School he secured employment with United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works. His career at the steel mill was temporarily interrupted when he was inducted into the United States Army during World War II. He subsequently fulfilled duty assignments as a Sergeant stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
Upon his return from the military, Mr. George rejoined U.S. Steel. He retired in 1980 as a supervisor in the Coke Plant ending a career that had spanned forty-three years with the company.
He was a parishioner of both the Catholic Church of Saint Peter and Saint Vitus Croatian Catholic Church. He was also a member of the U.S. Steel Management Club, the Lorain Senior Fellowship, and the Lorain Lebanese Club.
He enjoyed exercising at the Lorain Family YMCA and participating in league bowling competition at Rebman’s Recreation and the Croatian Lanes.
Mr. George is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Agnes (nee Fundak), a son Les George of Amherst, daughter Marie George-Stack, also of Amherst, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one step granddaughter, twin step grandchildren, and a sister Mary Stencil of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Lebebia Meena (nee Monseur) George, by brothers Mike, Leo, and George, and by sisters Sophie Royhab, Elizabeth Lizzie Keene, and Rose George.
Visitation will be Monday from 5-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel, and will be followed by the celebration of funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain where military honors will be conducted by officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans-Lorain.
