George C. Kokinda, 87, Decorated WWII Veteran, enjoyed travel

George C. Kokinda, age 87, of Amherst, Ohio, died Friday April 30, 2004 at the New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph in Lorain following an extended illness.

Mr. Kokinda was born April 8, 1917 in Adrian, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain County for most of his life.

He was a decorated World War II veteran of the United States Army where he served with the 79th Division of the 315th Infantry in Europe. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the European Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He had been employed as a millwright for the Lorain-Cuyahoga Works of the United States Steel Corporation and retired in 1976 following twenty-nine years of service with the company. He was a former member of United Steelworkers' Local #1104.

George was a parishioner of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst whose hobbies included gardening, travel, and home handyman projects.

Survivors include his son: Robert G. Kokinda residing in Dumfries, Virginia, and a grandson; Nick. He was preceded in death by his wife: Helen (nee Mitro), parents: John and Mary (nee Lesak) Kokinda, a brother; Mike, and sisters: Ann Gunza, Mary Katz, and Margaret Hilsansky.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday beginning at 11:15 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of funeral mass at Saint Joseph Catholic Church - 200 Saint Joseph Drive - Amherst at 12:00 noon; The Reverend Lawrence Martello, pastor of Saint Joseph Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain.
