Anthony L. Cantu, 80, WWII Veteran, enjoyed golf

Anthony L. “Tony” Cantu, age 80, of Lorain, died Sunday, April 25, 2004 at the New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph in Lorain following an extended illness.

Mr. Cantu was born May 14, 1923 in Gosset, Texas, and had been a resident of Lorain since childhood.

A U.S. Army Veteran serving during World War II, Mr. Cantu was employed as a laborer with Laborer’s Local #758 of Lorain and had a career that spanned more than fifty years. He retired in 1985.

Regarded as a golf enthusiast, Tony was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter in Lorain as well as a member of the national Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years: Julia “Judy” Cantu (nee Dongarra), son Ralph of Elyria Township, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, sister, Theresa Cantu of Detroit, Michigan, and brothers Sorkey Alvarado residing in Maryland and John Garcia of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his son Anthony in 2003, his father Andrew in 1927, and his mother Candelar (nee Lopez) Cantu in 1945 and by his brother Jessie Garcia.

Visitation will be Friday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. The Reverend David G. Woost, associate pastor of the Church of Saint Peter in Lorain will preside. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Park, Amherst Township.
