Helen E. Marimon, 79, First Chair Violin in LCCC Orchestra
Helen Eileen Marimon (nee Dunning), 79 of Avon Lake, formerly of Columbus, passed away suddenly at her home, Wednesday, April 21, 2004.Mrs. Marimon was born, July 16, 1924 in Cambridge, Ohio and had lived in Avon Lake since 1950.
Mrs. Marimon grew up in Columbus, Oh and played violin in the Columbus Philharmonic Orchestra 1942-44, Columbus Concert Orchestra 46-48. She was active at West High School, Columbus where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Valedictorian of her class in 1942.
She started attending Ohio State University, in January 1942, prior to her high school graduation. At Ohio State she was involved in: President Kappa Phi Sorority; Member Delta Zeta Sorority; President of the Education Honorary Sorority, P Lambda Theta and member of the music honorary sorority, Delta Omicron.
Mrs. Marimon graduated from Ohio State University in 1945 with a BS in Education, with Distinction; a BA Cum Laude and work was complete in Masters of Arts in French.
Mrs. Marimon taught English and French at Grandview High School Columbus, from 1945 to 1950. She taught for the following year in North Ridgeville.
Mrs. Marimon was a member of the PTA for 15 years starting in 1957. She was President of the Learwood Middle School, PTA in Avon Lake in 1962. Ticket chair for the PTA's Mighty Goliath Players from 1964-1973. She was active in her support of the Avon Lake School Levies and other political campaigns include that of former Avon Lake Mayor, Harold Early. She was also involved with ALCACE and Band Aids.
Mrs. Marimon was a member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ. The Church's Women's League from 1954 to the present, and served as President in 1970. Mrs. Marimon volunteered at the Church's Neighborhood Thrift Shop every Tuesday, since it opened in 1970, including this past Tuesday. She was a member of the Thrift Shop board from 1994-2001. She was a founding member, since 1985, of the Church's Bell Choir, which was started by her daughter Karen. She was Moderator of the Church in 1983 and served as a Deacon in 1986. She was the church's financial secretary twice, church clerk twice, served on the By Laws Committee, the Ohio Conference and the growth committee.
Mrs. Marimon was a violinist with the Avon Lake Community Orchestra 1965-68. First violin in the Lorain County Community College Orchestra from 1988 to the present. She would also play for special occasions at church.
Mrs. Marimon was president of American Field Services in 1974 and 75. She and her husband hosted student from 2 students from Japan and 1 from France, they are still in contact today.
Mrs. Marimon worked for the Board of Elections as a Booth Worker for the past 34 years as a presiding judge. She has been a member of the Avon Lake Garden Club since 1973, served as president in 1980-81. In 1975, 77, 83 and 96 she took first prize for Horticulture in the Garden Club Flower Show.
Mrs. Marimon volunteered at the Lorain Community Hospital from 1976-1998. She was a founding member of the Great Book Discussion Group at the Avon Lake Public Library.
She was an antique collector, namely Heisey Glass and had given talks on the History of Ohio Glass. She was a member of the Heisey Study Group.
She loved to knit, read, garden, paint, and travel. She and her husband had traveled to many foreign countries including: Canada, Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Germany, France, Spain, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Italy, Egypt, Greece, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Romania, Turkey, all the Scandinavian countries, Hong Kong, Philippines, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Ecuador, Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, Alaska and Hawaii in the states.
She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Marimon, whom she married, August 20, 1950. Other survivors include; daughters: Karen Kind (Richard) of Springboro, OH, Sue Ellen Speakman (Joseph) of Pickerington, OH and son: Thomas Lee Marimon (Vicky) of Silver Lake, OH. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Jennifer Radcliff(Dale), Richard Kind, Stephanie Kind, Joseph R. Speakman, Anne Speakman, Ryan Marimon, Todd Marimon, Justin Marimon, Kristyn Marimon and Mackenzie Marimon; and a great grandson, Andrew. She is preceded in death by two grandsons, Nathan and Tyler and her parents, Charles F. and Florence Mae (nee Griffith) Dunning.
Friends may call at the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 163 Avon Belden Rd. Avon Lake from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m., Friday, April 23. Funeral Services will be Saturday, April 24 at the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, 32801 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Kelly Peters of the church will officiate. Interment will follow in Lakewood Park Cemetery.
