John R. Antus, 80, U.S.P.S. Letter carrier and Former Proprietor of John's Market
John Richard Antus, age 80, of Lorain, died Thursday April 1, 2004 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following an illness of three weeks.Mr. Antus was born December 18, 1923 in Beaverdale, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain for most of his life.
A 1942 graduate of German Township High School in his native Pennsylvania, he was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran serving aboard the U.S.S. Albany.
John was employed as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service; he was assigned to the South Lorain Branch of the Postal Service where he fulfilled duty assignments primarily in the Homewood area of Lorain. He retired from that post in 1979. He was also employed in the mailroom of the Higbee Company (predecessor to Dillard’s Department Stores) for many years.
Prior to employment with the postal service, Mr. Antus was the proprietor of John’s Market which was formerly located at East 34th Street and Clifton Avenue for a number of years.
He was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter and had been a former member of Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church where he had served as a lector, usher, and councilman.
Mr. Antus also served for many years as an umpire in the Lorain Little League Program. He was an avid bowler participating extensively in league competition throughout the area.
Survivors include his son: Gregory of Lorain, grandson: Jordan, granddaughter: Jennifer, and great grandson: Nathan, sister: Helen Dennis of Lorain, and brothers: Richard of Lorain and Edward of Michigan City, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his wife: Josephine in 1976, by a son: John, by a grandson: Jared K. Antus, by his parents: John and Anna Antus, by sisters: Margaret Dancisko, Marie Rodaberger, and Annie Kasten, and by brothers: Michael and Andrew.
