Michael A. Bulzomi, 88, Golden Glove Award winner
Michael A. Bulzomi, age 88, died on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.Michael, the son of Giuseppe and Mary Bulzomi, who were natives of Italy, was born July 13, 1915 in Lorain. He was one of five siblings raised in Lorain, and remained a life long resident here.
Mike graduated from Lorain High School and completed courses at the Ohio State School of Criminal Identification and Investigation. He also received training from various schools on security management.
In his earlier years, Mike worked at the former National Tube Co., as a clerk, then as a State Highway Inspector and for the Lorain County Sheriffs Dept. In 1942, he was appointed to the Lorain Police force, where he worked for 25 years, before retiring in 1966 with the rank of Lieutenant. Following this, he served as Council at Large in Lorain from 1966 to 1970, and at the same time, working for Higbee Co., when it opened at the Midway Mall in Elyria as the Chief of Security. In 1967, he was elected as democratic precinct committeeman, serving both the 8th and 4th wards until 2003. Former Lorain Mayor Zahorec appointed Mike as Director of the Man Power Program, (formerly C.E.T.A.), until his retirement in 1980.
Mike's zeal for politics kept him involved in countless local, state and national Democratic campaigns. As a community leader, Mike founded and organized the Lorain Youth Center in 1947, and remained dedicated to the youth with priceless social and recreational outlets until 1975. In 1959, he received the Jaycees "Man of the Year" award for his work with the Youth Center.
Mike had a love for boxing that started in his youth, having received the Golden Glove Award in the lightweight division. This enthusiasm continued when he was named head trainer for the Cleveland Golden Gloves Team that participated in the National and Olympic Tournaments held in Washington D.C. In 1960, he received the Cleveland Golden Gloves "Trainer of the YearAward" for having 5 championships in a tournament. He served as president of the Lorain Boxing and Wrestling Commission and then president of the Ohio State Boxing and Wrestling Commission, and vice president of Lorain County Boxing and Wrestling Commission. In 1961, Mike was the momentum behind getting the Hot Stove League Franchise to which the Lorain Youth Center sponsored teams that won many city and state titles as well as the Golden Glove Franchise and hosting the Golden Gloves Tournaments at the Lorain Youth Center until 1975.
