Roberty Jay Hungerford, 74, WWII Veteran, truck driver for 40 years
Robert Jay Hungerford, 74 years of age, and a resident of Vermilion passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at his son's home in Vermilion following a lengthy illness.He was born April 5, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was raised in Elyria where he lived his whole life until falling ill in January, 2004 and moved in with his son.
He served in the US Army during World War II where he received the World War II Victory Medal, the Glider Badge, and the Army Occupation Medal. He was employed as a long distance truck driver for forty years. Robert was employed as a club house manager for the Cherry Ridge Golf Course and was a member of the Elyria Moose Lodge and the Elyria Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his sons Kenneth Hungerford of Elyria and Keith Hungerford of Vermilion; one granddaughter; his brother Walter Adams Hungerford of Elyria; and his sister Minnie Machnauer of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his son Robert Joseph Hungerford in 2001 and by his parents Charles and Fannie May Hungerford (nee: Carson).
A committal service with military honors will be held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends will be gathering for a memorial service on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church; 38550 Chestnut Ridge, Elyria.
