Marcella L. Eubanks, 79, Served in Navy, Retired Lorain Teacher

Marcella L. Eubanks, (nee McEldowney), age 79, of Lorain, Ohio and North Port, Florida, died on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, FL, following a illness of several weeks.

Born April 21, 1924 in Vanceburg, KY, she graduated from Morehead State University in Morehead, KY. She served in the US Navy in the W.A.V.E.S. (Women Auxiliary Volunteer Emergency Service) from 1943 to 1945 as a Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class, having received the Honorable Service Label Pin in 1943.

After coming to Lorain, she worked as a teacher for the Lorain City School System for 33 years, retiring in 1984.

She was a member of Delaware Avenue United Methodist Church, Lorain, Lakeland Women's Club, The Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 Auxiliary, the Lorain Retired Teachers, A.A.R.P., the Lorain Education Association, and the Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed reading, traveling, golfing, including golfing in the Deer Track Middies Golf League and the Lorain United Methodist Mixed Golf League. She also enjoyed bowling, including league bowling at Rebman's Recreation, Lorain.

She is survived by her daughter, Diann L. Cotterill, of Amherst, OH, and Deborah E. Eubanks, of Tiffin, OH, a brother, Samuel O. McEldowney, of Vanceburg, KY, 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, J. R. Eubanks, in 1975, her parents, Samuel A. McEldowney in 1944, and Lula E. (nee Miracle) McEldowney, in 1987, brothers, Charles, who died in 1944 while serving in WWII, Harry Thomas, in 1986, Jesse C., in 1987, sisters, Wilma Ruth McEldowney, in 1981, and Virginia Kidwell Esham, in 2000.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. The Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20, will conduct full military honors immediately following the funeral service. The family will also receive friends on Monday, March 29, 2004 at the Gaydos Funeral Home, 607 2nd Street, Vanceburg, Kentucky from 12 noon until time of services at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in McEldowney Family Cemetery in Vanceburg, KY.
