John D. Clarke, 82, Served in Europe during WWII

John D. Clarke - 82 of Avon Lake, passed away, Tuesday, February 25, at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, Lorain. Mr. Clarke was born, July 24, 1920 in Squirrel Hill, PA and had lived in Avon Lake many years.

Mr. Clarke was a 1938 graduate of Lakewood High School and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy from Penn State University in 1942. Upon graduation he began service in the US Army Corps of Engineers. He served in Europe during WWII and joined the Reserves at the end of the war. He was eventually discharged with the rank of Major. Mr. Clarke worked as a project engineer for US Steel, Lorain and retired after 37 years of employment. He was a member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ for 44 years and served his church in various capacities, including Treasurer, Moderator, Office Administrator and Superintendent of Sunday school.

Besides his wife Charlotte (nee Pettigrew) of 57 years, Mr. Clarke is survived by sons Roy J. Clarke (Susan) of Avon Lake, Bruce Clarke (partner Lettie White) of Columbus, daughters Barbara Clarke (Husband Issac Mowoe) of Dublin, OH and Virginia Clarke (partner Tom Slack) of Columbus. Other survivors include grandchildren, Jeffrey Clarke (Michelle) and Rita Mowoe and great grandchildren, Crystal Boozer and Justin Clarke. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy C. and Helen (nee Levegood) Clarke.

Friends may call in the Church Lounge, Thursday, February 27 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. A Memorial service will be in the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, 32801 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake, Friday, February 28 at 1:30 p.m. Memorials may be forwarded to the Avon Lake United Church of Christ Memorial Fund or the American Cancer Society, 43099 North Ridge Rd., Elyria, 44035. Cremation by Busch Crematory. Arrangements are by the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, Avon Lake.
