Joseph T. Mitchell, 79, Enjoyed reading, history, and travel

Joseph T. Mitchell, age 79, of Lorain, died Monday February 24, 2003 at Ohio Extended Care Center following an extended illness. Mr. Mitchell was born February 19, 1924 in Elko, Pennsylvania and had been a resident for Lorain most of his life.

Mr. Mitchell was employed in the Fuel and Power Division of U.S. Steel's Lorain Works. He retired in 1983 following 42 years of service with the company. He was a member of United Steelworkers Local #1104 as well as Golden Age Pensioner's Club.

He was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain where he had previously served as a member of the Parish Council.

He was extremely interested in civic and community affairs and prior to his illness was a familiar face at City Council and School Board meetings.

He was a member of the Senior Citizens of Lorain County as well as the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #552 of Lorain.

Mr. Mitchell took great pride in Lorain's history and was instrumental in initiating the Helen Steiner Rice Society; in recognition of his efforts, he was rewarded with the privilege of planting the tree commemorating her life at ceremonies in Elmwood Cemetery.

His hobbies include reading, history, and all forms of travel - both domestic and international.

Survivors include a son: Thomas A. Mitchell of Painesville Township, daughters: Kathryn Turner and Nancy Mitchell Rieth both of Lorain, 3 grandchildren, 3 great granddaughters, and sister: Mary Root, Leona Prosciutti, and Anna Czarney all of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Maria (nee DiLuciano) in 2002, by his parents: John and Catherine (nee Rudinsky) Micjan, and by a brother: John Micjan.

Private family funeral services will be held at a later date. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain.

The family suggests memorials in his memory to the New Life Hospice - 5255 North Abbe Road - Elyria, Ohio 44035.
