Elizabeth L. Phillips, 92, Vermilion Woman of the Year 1975, and established 8 scholarships for local schools

Elizabeth L. Phillips nee (Krapp), age 92, of Vermilion, died Thursday, February 20, 2003 at Kingston of Vermilion after a lengthy illness. She was born August 19, 1910 in Vermilion, Ohio where she has resided her whole life.

She was a graduate of Sandusky Business College. She worked as an office manager and secretary for the Vermilion office of Ohio Edison. She retired in 1969 after 39 years of service.

Mrs. Phillips was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, Vermilion, a Charter member of the Vermilion Lioness Club, and the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce. She was chaplain of the Pamona Grange and a member of the Ohio State Grange. She was a member of the 50-year Vermilion Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 397 and served as past president and secretary. She was American Legion Auxiliary 40 and 8 Past Chaplain. She was a charter member and past president of the Vermilion Business and Professional Women's club. She served as chairman of the Little Princess and Pet Parade of the Vermilion Fish Festival for many years. She was Queen of the Vermilion Sesquicentennial and Woman of the Year in 1975. She established six perpetual scholarships in the Vermilion School System and two in the Western Reserve System. She was active in the Vermilion Food Pantry since it opened; she also baked cakes for Meals on Wheels every Friday. In 1995 she and her husband donated the Gazebo in Victory Park, Vermilion. They received the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce Anchor Award and the Golden Triangle Award from the Vermilion YMCA.

She is survived by her sisters Esther Jackson and Eleanor Hollisy of Vermilion, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence E. Phillips, July 24, 1996, and her aunt, Eva Margaret Krapp who raised her from two weeks old, several aunts and uncles, and cousins.

Friends may call Sunday, February 23, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5354 South Street, Vermilion. The American Legion Auxiliary Post 397 will conduct an evening service at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 24, 2003 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. The Reverend Louis Bertoni, former pastor of the United Church of Christ Congregational, will officiate. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
