Charles J. Krasienko, 81, Decorated WWII Veteran

Charles J. Krasienko, 81, of Lorain, died Monday, February 17, 2003 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born May 10, 1921 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

Mr. Krasienko served with the US Army during World War II. On April 11, 1945 while under small arms and bazooka fire he took over his troop after his commander was killed. He reorganized the platoon and completed its mission inflicting heavy causalities and capturing an estimated 40 Nazi soldiers. He was awarded the highest French medal, the Croix de Guerro, and three Bronze Stars, two Silver Stars, the Sharpshooter Medal, the Good Conduct Ribbon, and the Combat Infantryman's Medal.

Mr. Krasienko worked at US Steel in Lorain in the open hearth for 23 years. He then worked at City Iron & Waste in Lorain retiring in 1982.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lorain and a life member of VFW Post #496 of Lorain. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn (nee Berens), daughters Wanda Howington and JoAnn Krasienko, both of Lorain, and Laurie Goble of Lakeland, Florida; sons: Thomas, Robert, and John Krasienko, all of Lorain; 18 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and a sister Agnes Szep of Avon. He was preceded in death by his daughter Christine Godles, parents Stanley and Gladys Krasienko, sisters Florence Frazee and Sophie Krall, and brothers: Steve, John, and Alexander Krasienko.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 19, 2003 from 7-9 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 am. The Rev. Frederick Young, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church of Elyria will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 will conduct military honors.
