Mary E. Mate, 91, Accomplished cook, baker, and enjoyed gardening, sewing, and reading

Mary E. Mate (nee Stitak), age 91, of Lorain, died Thursday, February 6, 2003 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following a brief illness. Mrs. Mate was born March 21, 1911 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city. She was a graduate of Holy Trinity Parochial School there.

During the Great Depression years she and her sister, Anna Radman, served as housekeepers for Fr. Johnson at St. Mary Catholic Church. She was later employed as a chief inspector for the Western Automatic Company (Stanadyne/Moen) of Elyria.

An active parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain, she was a member of its Altar and Rosary Society. Mrs. Mate was also affiliated with St. Ann's Lodge Branch #228 of the First Catholic Slovak Union.

She was an accomplished cook was especially well known for her stuffed cabbage and roasted chicken recipes. She was a gifted baker who also enjoyed gardening, sewing, and reading. She frequently volunteered her services at the weekly fish fries at the American Slovak Club (Lorain) as well as the chicken dinners hosted by the Retirees Club of U.A.W. Local #425 in Elyria.

Mrs. Mate is survived by her sons: Don of Lorain, and Paul of Avon Lake, daughters: Marguerite Czompoly of Lorain and Roseann Geres of Vermilion, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and by brothers: Thomas G. Stitak, Sr. and Carl both of Lorain. She was preceded in death by her husband: Michael G. Mate in 1984, parents: Andrew and Anna (nee Martincak) Stitak, granddaughter: Samantha Czompoly, sister: Anna Radman, and by brothers: Andy, Emil, John, Frank "Fritz", and Anthony.

Visitation will be Monday, February 10, 2003 from 2-8 pm in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain where a rosary will be recited by officers and members of the Holy Trinity Altar and Rosary Society at 3:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 11, 2003 beginning at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel and will be followed by her funeral mass at 10:00 am in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2428 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend David A. Novak, pastor of Holy Trinity Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
