Fred T. Merrill, 81, WWII Army Veteran
Fred T. Merrill, age 81, of Lorain, died Monday February 3, 2003 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born October 28, 1921 in Brokaw, Ohio and had been a resident of Lorain since the early 1940's coming from McConnellsville.Mr. Merrill was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving as a Technician Fourth Grade with the Panama Canal Headquarters Detachment. He was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was the owner-operator of both the Arrow Cab Company based in South Lorain as well as the City Cab Company based at the loop in downtown Lorain. He retired in 1979 after providing more than thirty years of taxi service to Lorain and the surrounding communities. He had previously been employed by the Thew Division of Koehring Company as well as U.S. Steel.
Mr. Merrill was a life member of Amvets Post # 47 of Lorain; he enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years: Betty (nee Mihalik), a son: Michael of Elyria, daughters: Victoria Kayatin-Szilasy and Carol McDermott both of Lorain, Janet Henson of Hockley, Texas, and DeAnna Peacock of Amherst, 8 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Corbin and Delilah (nee Taylor) Merrill, by grandsons: Thomas Looney and Tyler Peacock, by a sister: Sue Cooper, and by brothers: Herman Merrill and Leonard Brower.
