George E. Michener, 70, Avid sports fan and enjoyed reading
George E. Michener, age 70, of Lorain, died Monday January 27, 2003 in the emergency room of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center West after being stricken with an apparent heart attack at his home. He was born on September 30, 1932 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain since 1960 coming from Pennsylvania.Mr. Michener graduated from Charleroi High School where he participated in basketball at the varsity level. In 1960 he received his Bachelor's of Science Degree with a special focus on Science and Social Studies from the California State Teachers College of Pennsylvania.
George was a veteran of the United States Navy where he had served form 1953 until 1956; much of his enlistment was spent fulfilling duty assignments in Japan. He was currently a member of American Legion Post #30 of Lorain.
Mr. Michener began his career as a middle school Science and Biology teacher for the Lorain Public School Learwood Schools. During much of that time he also served as a coach for the basketball, football, and track teams. He retired in 1992 following 32 years of service with the district.
An avid sports fan, he was the coach of the Sertoma Little League baseball team that participated in the Lorain City Recreational League. He also was an avid reader who had a particular interest in military history.
George is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marlene (nee Petros), sons: Steven and Mark of Lorain, Stanley of South Lyon, Michigan, daughters: Michelle Michener and Susan Perez of Lorain, granddaughters: Lisa, Allison, Kaitlyn, and Marissa, sister; Sally Hough of Charleroi, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: George E. and Catherine Russell (nee Tope) Michener, and sister Patricia Tedrow.
Private family funeral services were held in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Robert Glepko, pastor of Nativity B.V.M. Catholic church and Reverend Mr. Lou Maldonado, Permanent Deacon of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
The family requests memorials in his memory to either the Lorain Public Library or to Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church, 418 West 15th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.
