Alex Mate, 76, US Steel Retiree
Alex Mate, 76, of Lorain, died Thursday, December 26, 2002 in the critical care unit at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria.He was born February 21, 1926 in Kulpmont, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain for the past 60 years.
Mr. Mate served with the US Navy after World War II.
He worked at US Steel in Lorain as a diesel mechanic and scarfer fro 40 years retiring in 1987.
He attended the Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ in Lorain. He was a member of the American Legion Post #30, Moose Lodge #552 and the FOPA, all of Lorain. He enjoyed coin collecting, walking at the Midway Mall and his dog.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Estelle (nee Hopper), son Robert Alexander Mate of Deland, Florida, daughters Donna Jean Mate and Karen Critelli, both of Lorain, son David Allen Mate of Lorain, stepson Joseph Keller of Columbus, Ohio, stepdaughter Betty Hall of Lorain, stepson Lee Keller of Lorain, stepson Mark Keller of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, stepdaughter Deborah Martin of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, stepson John Paul Keller of Columbus, Ohio; 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 25 step-grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen mate (nee Doychak), brother Manhardt Phillips, sister Helen Kayatin (nee Phillips) and mother Rose Phillips-Mate.
Friends may call Sunday, December 29, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain where funeral services will be held Monday, December 30, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Zoltan Kelemen, pastor of the West Side Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ in Cleveland, will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens where the American Legion Post #30 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
