Blanche Skorvanek, 85, Accomplished Cook

Blanche Skorvanek (nee Powell), age 85 of Lorain, died Monday, December 23, 2002 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following an extended illness.

She was born September 28, 1917 in Summertown, Tennessee and had been a resident of Lorain for most of her life.

She was formerly employed as an assistant food service manager for the Higbees Department Store at Midway Mall; she retired from that position in the early 1970's.

She was an accomplished cook who was well known for the Thanksgiving dinners that she prepared for her family and friends. She was also a lover of dogs.

Survivors include daughters: Sharon Kaye Brumback of Lorain, Rosemary Dubina of Oberlin, and Karen Skorvanek of Wakeman, sons: Stanley G. Plottner, John M. Skorvanek, Patrick D. Skorvanek and James J. Skorvanek all of Lorain, 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren, along with sisters Ruth Spears and Dorothy Excue both of Summertown, Tennessee and Kat residing in Detroit, Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her husband: John J. Skorvanek in 1991, by a daughters: Shirley Wigley in 1993, by a granddaughter: Elizabeth Dubina in 2002, by her parents: Presley and Rose (nee Weirick) Powell, by brothers: Eddie and Harvey Powell, and by sisters: Sarah Boesher, Faye, and Elizabeth.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 26, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday, December 27, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend David Novak, pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the Leukemia Foundation.
