Eugene A. Sestili, 83, World War II Veteran
Eugene A. Sestili, 83, of Amherst, died Tuesday December 10, 2002 in the critical care unit at Community Health Partners Hospital & Surgical Center in Lorain. He was born November 23, 1919 in Lorain and was a lifelong Amherst/Lorain area resident.He was a 1934 graduate of Lorain High School. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the 772nd Tank Division and saw action in Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the ATO Medallion, the EAMETO Medallion, the Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.
Mr. Sestili worked with the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local #42 of Norwalk for 35 years. He worked 20 of those years with Gross Plumbing of Lorain. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, Italian-American Veterans Post #1 and AMVETS Post #47, both of Lorain. Mr. Sestili was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golfing and bowling.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Sylvia M. "Sally" Sestili (nee Bischoff); daughter Darla Urbanek of Lorain; son Walter R. Sestili of Hudson; 4 grandchildren; 1 foster granddaughter, 2 great grandchildren; sisters Florence Sestili and Rose Calzone, both of Cleveland and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Francisco and Henrietta (nee Celano) Sestili; sisters Mary Rulli and Jacunda Varady and brothers Ernest Sestili, Joseph Sestili and Salvadore Sestili.
The family will receive friends Friday December 13, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where the Italian-Americans Veterans Post #1 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
