Steven J. Walend, 84, Job Setter
Steve J. Walend, age 84, of Lorain, died Monday, December 9, 2002 at his residence following an extended illness.He was born July 24, 1918 in Elyria and had been a resident of Lorain since 1950 coming from Elyria.
Mr. Walend attended Holy Cross Parochial School (Elyria), Jefferson Middle School, and Elyria High School where he was a member of the graduating class of 1938. While at Elyria High he was active in sports and was a member of the First Elyria High School football team to win the Lake Erie League Championship in 1935 under coach Tuffy Bauer.
He went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II as a Technician Fifth Grade attached to the 976th Engineers Maintenance Company. He saw extensive action throughout England, Northern France, Belgium, and the Rhinelad, and was the recipient of the Good Conduct medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stores. He was a former member of the Mullen-Murray Post #451 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lorain.
Mr. Walend was employed as a job setter for the former Western Automatic Company of Elyria which later became the Stanadyne Corporation, and is currently known as the Moen Corporation. He retired in 1980 following 41 years of service with the company.
He was an active parishioner of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain where he was also a member of the Holy Name Society.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jennie (nee Olejko), sons: Alan of Vermilion and Stephen F. of Sheffield Township, daughters Marilyn Chavez of Kokomo, Indiana, Joan Koons and Anne Losh both of Sheffield Township, 13 grandchildren, brother Raymond Walend of Avon Lake and a sister Jennie Franko of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Anna (nee Sobotak) Walendziak, by his brothers: Frank and Bernard Walend and by a sister Bernice Denes.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 12, 2002 from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, where a rosary service will be conducted by members of the St. Stanislaus Holy Name Society at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, December 13th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 2702 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend Kevin C. Shemuga, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain where Amvets Post #47 will conduct full military honors.
The family suggests memorials in his name to either St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain or to New Life, 5255 North Abbe Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
