Alfred J. Bonko, 72, Korean War Veteran
Alfred J. Bonko, 72, of Lorain, died Saturday December 7, 2002 at his home after a brief illness. He was born July 11, 1930 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.Mr. Bonko was a graduate of St. Mary High School in Lorain. He served with the US Army during the Korean War and received one Bronze Service Star and the Korean Service Medal with One Bronze Camp Star.
Mr. Bonko worked at US Steel in Lorain in Electrical Maintenance in the Coke Plant for 39 years retiring in 1987.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain where he served on church council. He was a member of St. Ann Lodge Branch #114, the Fraternal Catholic Slovak Ladies Union, the United Polish Club of Lorain, AMVETS Post #47 of Lorain and a past member of the American Slovak Club. Mr. Bonko enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, baseball, woodworking, boating, golf, and family activities.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years Lillian (nee Yurovich); daughters Mrs. Mark J. (Diane M.) Erdei of Sheffield Lake and Mrs. Mark (Debra M.) Lacek of Clemont, Florida; sons Douglas A. (Denise) Bonko of Vermilion; 4 grandchildren, twin sister Alice Miller of Lorain and sister Marianne Shutic of Avon. He was preceded in death by his parents John & Mary Bonko, brother John Bonko and sister Agnes Sulko.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 4-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held in the funeral chapel on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2428 Elyria Ave., Lorain. The Rev. David Novak, pastor, will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by AMVETS Post #47 of Lorain. Cremation will follow.
