Evelyn Nowell, 92, Teacher
Evelyn Nowell (nee Smith), 92 years of age, and a resident of Elyria, passed away Monday, December 2, 2002 at Life Care Center of Elyria.She was born November 28, 1910 in Avon where she was raised and graduated from Avon high School with the class of 1928. She has been a lifetime Lorain County resident.
Evelyn was a math and English teacher for 10 years working for Kipton, Clearview, Avon, retiring from Rocky River after 26 years. She was a past member of the former Avon Baptist Church. Evelyn and her mother were the first mother and daughter Alumni from Avon High. She graduated with a BA in teaching from Oberlin College in 1932 and did five summers of graduate work.
Survivors include her sister, Jeanne Nickel of Amherst, her nephew Kenneth Robert Nickel and a niece Laurel Nickel Beam.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, John Kenneth Nowell in 1972 and her parents Martin and Clara (nee Barrows) Smith.
Private graveside services were held at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
